How To Make An Indonesian Rendang Curry

Originating from West Sumatra in Indonesia, the Rendang recipe was linked to the Minangkabau people. They typically cooked the delicious dish on a daily basis. However, it was cooked on ceremonial occasions to honour guests and festive seasons. 

Traditionally, a Rendang is cooked using coconut milk and beef as the main ingredients. Traditional recipes would then add pepper, onions, turmeric leaves and lime leaves. The dish would be left to cook for hours until the sauce was completely absorbed by the meat. Thus, leaving it delicious and juicy to eat.

Now, while best served in its home country, you needn’t travel all the way to Sumatra to recreate this iconic dish. At Family Secret, we have created a range of low fat curry sauces that are perfect for creating traditional dishes – including our Indonesian Rendang Curry sauce.

For this recipe you will need:

● 575g Diced Beef

● Family Secret’s Indonesian Rendang Curry Sauce

● 200ml Water

● 250g Basmati Rice


1. Add the diced beef to a wok and cook on a medium heat for at least 3 to 4 minutes – or until the meat has browned.

2. When the meat is cooked, stir in Family Secret’s Rendang sauce and leave to simmer on a low heat. If you want the sauce to go further, particularly if you have a big family, try adding the water to thin out the sauce.

3. You will know when the dish is ready when the meat is tender to touch and liquid has been fully absorbed. This will usually take an hour to happen. However, if you’re in a rush to cook a quick dinner, we recommend leaving the sauce to simmer for at least 30 minutes.

4. While your Rendang is cooking, prepare your basmati rice and serve up onto your dinner plates.

Gluten Free Curries with Family Secrets Sauces

Just because you have a gluten allergy or have sworn off wheat products for good doesn’t mean your food shouldn’t be ridiculously delicious.

However, at Family Secret we know how difficult it can be to cut out gluten-based products such as wheat, rye, oats, barley so we have created a number of recipes to inspire you.

Today, we’re focusing on some quick and easy dinnertime recipes for you and the family to enjoy.

With a collection of curry sauces from around the world, our favourite recipes are using our gluten free sauces to create delicious, flavour-filled curries. 

Red Thai Curry with Tofu

If you’ve wondered ‘how to make red thai sauces?’, it can seem like a difficult task; especially when you’re new to cooking curries. However, our Red Thai Curry Sauce comes pre-made and packed full of flavour and fresh ingredients. This means our Red Thai Curry is a quick and easy meal to prepare with our sauces.

To make a gluten-free Red Thai Curry, you will need:

● A bowl of ½ mixed vegetables of your choosing (we recommend white onions, baby bok choy and green pepper)

● ⅓ block of tofu

● Family Secrets Red Thai Curry Sauce

● Brown rice

Prepare a block of tofu and pan fry on medium heat with some oil, mixing the tofu until lightly golden brown. While the tofu is cooking prepare the vegetables and add into your tofu mix. Cook together until the vegetables are slightly tender.

Once your tofu and vegetables are cooked, you can add our Red Thai Curry Sauce into the pan combined with all the ingredients until the tofu and vegetables are soft. If you want to thin out the sauce to serve more people, we recommend adding 3 tbsp of coconut milk to the pan.

For proper serving, serve the curry over cooked brown rice.

Moroccan Lamb Tagine with Pumpkin & Quinoa

One of our favourite dishes to cook at home is our lamb Moroccan Tagine recipe, bursting full of flavour and perfect for individuals with gluten allergies.

For this recipe you will need:

● A 1kg lamb shoulder – deboned, cubed and trimmed of fat.

● 2 cups of chicken stock

● 300g of butternut squash – cut into medium cubes.

● 1 cup of quinoa

● My Family Secrets Moroccan Tagine Sauce

For the optimum flavour we suggest combining the lamb and our Moroccan Tagine sauce and leaving them to marinade for at least 3 hours or overnight. Once you have left the lamb to marinate, preheat the oven to 180C.

If you’re looking to prepare a quick dinner, feel free to skip marinating the meat overnight. You will still feel the impact of the flavour in our sauces when you add to the dish straight from packet.

Add your lamb shoulder and marinade to a heavy-based casserole pot on your hob and cook on a medium heat. We recommend you stir occasionally for 5 minutes until the lamb shoulder is browned.

As you’re stirring, add the chicken stock and butternut squash to your pot and place in the oven for an hour.

In the meantime, you can prepare the quinoa by rinsing under water to remove any grittiness. Place in a separate pot with a pinch of salt and 2 cups of water and cook for 15 minutes at 100C. Once done, rest for 5 minutes then fluff the quinoa with a fork.

Remove the tagine from the oven and serve with the quinoa.

Low calorie rogan josh curry

National Potato Day: Sweet Potato Rogan Josh Curry

National Potato Day is on the 19th August! Family Secret are celebrating the day dedicated to spuds with a brand new potato curry recipe using our healthy curry sauce, Rogan Josh. 

This cheap and easy dish is the perfect vegetarian solution for an after-work meal.

For our Family Secret ‘Low Fat Rogan Josh Curry with Sweet Potato’ recipes, you will need:

  • Olive Oil
  • 2 Red Onions
  • 3 Medium-Sized Sweet Potatoes
  • 1 x 400g tin chickpeas
  • 400g spinach
  • Family Secret Rogan Josh Curry Sauce 
  1. Heat up 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a large sauce pan on a medium heat.
  2. While your oil is cooking, peel and finely slice your onions before adding them into the pan. As you cook the onions for 10 minutes, stir them occasionally until they are soft and golden.
  3. Once your onions have softened, add Family Secret’s Rogan Josh sauce into the pan and mix well. At a medium spice, this sauce takes inspiration from Kashmiri cuisine where the Rogan Josh dishes are considered a ‘staple’. It is one of healthier sauces in our range being low in fat and sugar – perfect for anyone looking to lose weight while enjoying flavoursome meals.
  4. Chop your sweet potatoes into 2cm chunks and add into the pan with the softened onions. If you want to add extra spice, we recommend chopping up one fresh red chilli and add into your pan of vegetables.
  5. While you stir together your cooked ingredients, drain and tip your tin of chickpeas, then cook together for 5 minutes.
  6. If you have a particularly big family to serve, roughly chop up and add your fresh tomatoes (if using) or tip in tinned tomatoes and add 200ml of water. This should thicken up the sauce to serve more people.
  7. Now that you have added all your core ingredients, reduce the heat of your pan to a simmer and cover. Then cook for at least 15 minutes.
  8. After 15 minutes, remove the lid and cook for a further 15 to 20 minutes. However, this time we recommend stirring every once in a while to ensure the sweet potato is cooked through and sauce has thickened.
  9. In your last minutes of cooking, be sure to add the spinach and cook until wilted. Then serve your dish with Papadums and rice.
