Common Diwali Dishes You Can Cook At Home

Celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the world, today is Diwali – otherwise known as ‘The Festival of Lights’.

In the UK, Diwali has become increasingly popular and far more mainstream. In fact, celebrations are catching up to the level of how it’s celebrated in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

Despite it’s growing popularity in and around the UK, most people outside of India are unfamiliar with the common dishes served on this occasion, such as the Rogan Josh Curry.

Here at Family Secrets, the team have researched thousands of traditional recipes served during this five-day celebration.

The kids will be pleased to know that sweets are at the very centre of Diwali celebrations. No, we’re not talking Haribos. Instead, we’re talking about Indian sweetmeats. These are known as “mithai”. These sweetmeats are a mix between a snack, dessert and confectionery. This makes them the perfect treat during and indeed after a long day of celebrating.

Amongst the sweet dishes, there are also a few savoury treats you can enjoy. Traditionally, preparing these snacks is a social activity for the women in the family. The older generations will gather with their younger relatives in the kitchen to make savoury snacks. They are made from chickpeas, rice, lentils and other varieties of flours. Once seasoned, the snacks get pummelled into different shapes. You should deep-fry before they are delivered to family and friends in boxes.

This Diwali, we have a few dishes you should try out:

  • Vegetable Pakora – As crispy Indian snack, pakora is made-up of one or two ingredients of your choosing; onions, potatoes, spinach, cauliflower or tomato. When the vegetables are combined, the cooks will dip the pakoras in batter and deep-fried. These are best served with a rich chutney or curry sauce like our low-calorie Rogan Josh curry sauce!
  • Savoury Samosas – Another Indian snack, but this one is packed with spices! Traditionally, spiced potatoes, onions, lentils, minced lamb or beef fill the samosas. Once mixed together, the bakers place the filling in a triangular pastry casing for baking. These snacks often go well with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.
  • Chole Bhature – Otherwise known as chickpea curry. This dish is healthy and filling. Perfect for a weekday dinner! Quick and easy to make. All you need to do is thicken up our low-fat Punjabi Tadka sauce in a pan for a few minutes. Then adding a tin of chickpeas. If you’re looking for a thicker consistency, mash a few of the chickpeas while cooking. Then simmer for 5 minutes. Once it’s ready, serve up with some bread or plain basmati rice.

How to make a chicken curry

How to Make the Perfect Chicken Curry

Simple yet packed with flavour, chicken curries are a popular dishes in the UK. In fact, one in seven curries sold in Britain is a chicken tikka masala.

Commonly found in South Asia as well as the Caribbean, a chicken curry is a quick and easy dish. It is made up of chicken stewed in an onion and tomato sauce. However, at Family Secret, we like to spice things up a bit!

We have designed a collection of rich and fresh sauces that will go perfectly with your chicken on curry night.

Low Fat Green Thai Curry Sauce

The Green Thai curry is undoubtedly one of the world’s most popular curry dishes. It’s a signature of Thai cuisine!

A sweet yet spicy dish, our Green Thai curry recipe embraces these qualities and packs them into our family sauces. Drawing back to traditional recipes, our sauce contains a number of ingredients including:

  • Lemon grass
  • Galangal (ginger)
  • Garlic
  • Kefir lime leaves
  • Cilantro roots
  • Shrimp paste

These ingredients thicken and sweeten the sauce, while the spices: cumin, coriander and turmeric and fresh green chillies, really pack a punch.

Low Calorie Rogan Josh Curry Sauce

While typically cooked with Persian lamb, our Rogan Josh curry sauce compliments chicken.

Despite being used with chicken, our sauce maintains that true Kashmiri style – containing traditional ingredients used in its original recipes from India. Whether it’s diced onions, tomatoes, low fat yoghurt and garam masala or ground cardamon, cinnamon and lemon juice, we stay true to what makes this healthy curry sauce great – and that is flavour!

Low Sugar Punjabi Tadka Curry Sauce

Heavily influencing takeaway curries and our idea of a “curry”, Punjabi Tadka is a simple curry sauce that is not to be overlooked.

Typically served with chicken, the Punjabi Tadka sauce acts like a thick, gravy-like dressing. Despite its thick sauce, the Punjabi Tadka is made up of only a few ingredients like diced onions, ginger puree, garam masala, turmeric, green Indian chillies and coriander.
