Celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the world, today is Diwali – otherwise known as ‘The Festival of Lights’.

In the UK, Diwali has become increasingly popular and far more mainstream. In fact, celebrations are catching up to the level of how it’s celebrated in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

Despite it’s growing popularity in and around the UK, most people outside of India are unfamiliar with the common dishes served on this occasion, such as the Rogan Josh Curry.

Here at Family Secrets, the team have researched thousands of traditional recipes served during this five-day celebration.

The kids will be pleased to know that sweets are at the very centre of Diwali celebrations. No, we’re not talking Haribos. Instead, we’re talking about Indian sweetmeats. These are known as “mithai”. These sweetmeats are a mix between a snack, dessert and confectionery. This makes them the perfect treat during and indeed after a long day of celebrating.

Amongst the sweet dishes, there are also a few savoury treats you can enjoy. Traditionally, preparing these snacks is a social activity for the women in the family. The older generations will gather with their younger relatives in the kitchen to make savoury snacks. They are made from chickpeas, rice, lentils and other varieties of flours. Once seasoned, the snacks get pummelled into different shapes. You should deep-fry before they are delivered to family and friends in boxes.

This Diwali, we have a few dishes you should try out:
